IFWE in Christianity Today: Does Capitalism Need Redeeming?

IFWE’s executive director Hugh Whelchel was recently published in Christianity Today on the question of whether capitalism is sustainable in our current moral climate. In his article, Whelchel reviews a new book called Redeeming Capitalism by Kenneth J. Barnes of Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary.

The morality and viability of capitalism are topics we tackle frequently here at IFWE. We have discussed the various criticisms of capitalism from a biblical perspective and encouraged Christians to live out their faith in the workplace to help sustain economic freedom.

As Whelchel writes, much of the moral decline in the business arena has occurred as a result of Christians believing there is a “sacred/secular” divide between what they do on Sunday and what they on Monday:

But in more recent times, we have been negligent in being salt and light in the world of business. Far too many Christians have bought into the notion that their vocational work is secular and has little or nothing to do with their faith. They have neglected Paul’s admonition to “do it all for the glory of God” (1 Cor. 10:31). As a result, they work just like everyone around them and wonder why the culture has become so corrupt.
